First you were my mentor, dear Henry, then my colleague and mentor, then my friend and colleague, and now my very dear friend of 50 years.

I look forward to being with you and your other friends and admirers on your 90th birthday. As ever, Brian (Brian Groombridge, Professor Emeritus of Adult Education, University of London, former educational broadcaster, co-worker with Henry on several UNESCO, EUROSTEP and University projects).

Dear Henry

I wish to send you lots of congratulations and best wishes on your birthday.I have been a really lucky man when I have learnt to know you!!!

I have learnt so much from your life experience through the years we have been working together. You have seen so much during your long life.I know that many things you have seen are not only happy, Europe in 30's and40's was not so good.But fortunately there are a lot of positive things, and you have been working for them the whole life.I have learned to know you working with disabled friends in France. You have been a real companion and supporter for these people who are working to improve the life of disabled people in France and in the globe. Also you have not limited your work only in France.I wish you all the best in future and we will work together in future naturally. Through you I also want send greetings to my disabled friends in France.

À mon cousin favorit

Dear Heiner,

You have been my favorite first cousin for 72 years. Although you first saw me in 1929 at our grandmother's 70th birthday celebration in Lubeck my first memory of you is in 1933 when we moved to Berlin. You were a young man; I was 4; you took me to the zoo.

Your significance to me is based not so much on our brief contacts over the years but rather on the connection that you are to my father Fritz. He was your mother's younger brother and she took care of him like a mother. Pehaps for that reason Fritz felt especially close to you; but it is probably because you and he shared ideas and idealism in the early 1930's. Your life spans the century and the consciousness you bring to this fact is wonderful.

I wish for you that your good mind and warm heart will see you through all the years of your life. May your 90th birthday celebration and the years ahead be gratifying for you.

Bon anniversaire

Henry,

Nous nous connaissons depuis 1987 lors d'une assemblée générale du Collectif Handicap de la Région Annécienne et depuis, notre relation a duré. Chaque fois que l'un d'entre nous avait des problèmes, nous en avons parlé et de là et née notre amitié. Nous avons une vision des choses assez semblable avec la différence à ton avantage, de tes nombreuses expériences.

Je pense que nous sommes assez complémentaires. J'ai apprécié chaque fois que tu m'as apporté ton soutien. Je tiens à t'en remercier publiquement.

Aujourd'hui à ton entrée dans cet âge vénérable, et oui, très peu d'entre nous vont l'atteindre, tu continues à avoir de grands projets. Je te souhaite de pouvoir les mener à bien, et, tu sais que malgré les difficultés que je rencontre, je serais toujours prêt, si tu en as le besoin, à t'apporter mon aide.

Bon anniversaire et surtout reste dans une santé la meilleure possible.

Tu avais 47 ans quand je venais au monde et, séparés par deux générations, nos discussions ont toujours été celles de deux complices, deux hommes. Tu as toujours agi et tu continues d'agir avec toute ton âme et toute ta force et, alors même que je me suis dis plus d'une fois "j'abandonne", c'est toi qui trouve la force de persévérer. Tu es un conseiller, un maître, un père, un ami et un complice, en un mot, tu es un roc, car tu en as toutes les qualités : la force, la dureté et la résistance. Je ne suis qu'un des nombreux enfants que tu as guidé et aimé tout au long de ta vie, et j'en suis fier. Merci Henry, je souhaite que cette décennie soit celle de l'avènement des principes humanistes dont tu es un des plus fidèles représentants, car je sais que ton plus beau cadeau reste la mise en œuvre du respect des droits de l'homme partout et pour tous afin que chacun puisse exprimer sa créativité et contribuer au mieux être de l'humanité.
